Market Share of Windows Operating Systems

Some investment firms have conducted studies showing significant cannibalization of traditional PC sales by the iPad and other tablets, though many incumbent companies in the PC industry have downplayed the impact. Microsoft has sold more than 350 million licenses for Windows 7, while Apple has sold more than 19 million iPads.

Microsoft previously has said it is doing technical work to make Windows-powered tablets more attractive -- for example, by getting the software to run on microprocessors that consume less battery power and emit less heat.

Overall, earnings for the fiscal third quarter ended March 31 jumped to $5.23 billion, or 61 cents a share, from $4.01 billion, or 45 cents a share, during the same period a year earlier. Revenue rose to $16.43 billion from $14.5 billion a year ago.

Another big source of Microsoft profits, the division that includes its Office applications, provided a big lift to results, with a 21% increase in revenue to $5.25 billion during the quarter.

The entertainment and devices division also continued to be strong, dominated by sales of its Xbox 360 game console and the Kinect game playing sensor. The Kinect, launched during the holidays, has become a hit among consumers -- a market Microsoft has stumbled in with other products like mobile phones and tablets. Revenue in the entertainment and devices division jumped 60% to $1.94 billion.
